      1. Claire says:

Saunders Musical Theatre will present its latest Broadway musical from May 11 – 15, 2010. THE WEDDING SINGER, best known as a Hollywood feature film starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, was adapted for the stage in 2006. Musical director Claire Porter-Martin says, "The latest trend on Broadway is to take Hollywood hits and turn them into musicals. We’ve seen this format be successful with Beauty and the Beast, Legally Blond and Shrek, among others, and it’s a great way to hook media consuming teens into the thrill of live theatre."

The storyline of THE WEDDING SINGER follows the same plot as the film. The era is 1985 and Robbie Hart, a rock-star wannabe, is New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer. He’s the life of the party – until his own fiancée leaves him at the altar. Director Deighton Thomas says, "The themes of the piece, seeking fame, longing for love and acceptance, following trends while trying to maintain one’s individuality, are reflected in today’s youth culture. This show will particularly be of interest to teens, but the over 30 crowd will be amused by the tribute to the songs and fads of the 1980’s."

The musical score features two songs from the film as well as a pop/rock music inspired by the hits of the 1980’s. Combined with energetic dance numbers, colourful costumes, and a live rock band, THE WEDDING SINGER guaranteed to please! The show is rated PG.

THE WEDDING SINGER runs at Saunders Secondary School (941 Viscount Road) May 11 – 15, at 7:30 pm. Tickets, $10 for Students and $15 for Adults, are available via The Grand Theatre Box Office (www.grandtheatre.com/519-672-8800) or at the school (519) 452-2770.
