Fuente Ovejuna
Fuente Ovejuna (the sheep’s well) is based on a true story. In 1476 the villagers of that small town, rebelled against their cruel feudal lord, Commander Fernan Gomez de Guzman, and violently killed him to avenge the series of atrocities he committed towards them. Set during a time of upheaval and war in Spain as lines were drawn between factions who supported either Queen Isabella of Castile and King Ferdinand of Aragon, or King Alfonso of Portugal and Princess Juana of Castile. By focusing on the struggles of a community to persevere and rise up against the tyranny and abuse by Guzman and his thugs, especially the mistreated women of the village, Fuente Ovejuna is, at its heart, a story of love and the value of solidarity. The bonds between the villagers prove stronger than the fear and pain inflicted on them by their feudal masters. Even under the pain of torture the villagers remain steadfast and loyal to each other while pledging allegiance to Isabella and Ferdinand.
