THE SHADOW BOX by Michael Cristofer

Synopsis: This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning drama examines the lives of a workingman faced with the awesome unknown, a failed intellectual torn between his flamboyant wife and his homosexual lover and an irascible, cussing old woman kept alive with letters from the dead. Each is being interviewed about the process of dying. For most of the play the interviewer is unseen, which means the characters speak directly to the audience as if they were the interviewer. Each is about to com e terms with the one inescapable fact of life in a dram a of haunting eloquence and harrowing wit that will change the way you think and feel about dying. This play contains strong language and mature subject matter.

Please prepare a 1- 2 min monologue, from a contemporary American or Canadian play. You should also have read The Shadow Box and be prepared to discuss the script. PRODUCTION DATES:                  February 25, 26, 27, 28, and March 5, 6, 7, 2009 @ 8:00 p.m., March 1 and 7 @ 2:00 p.m .

  • Steve (17-18; ability to play the guitar if possible)

  • Beverly (early 40’s)
  • Agnes (mid – late 50’s)
  • Felicity (mid 70’s)

Scripts are available for the 2008/2009 season to read in advance – and must be returned no later than the first audition date. Please contact the Palace Theatre Box Office at 519-432-1029 to make arrangements. A $10.00 REFUNDABLE deposit is required.
